There is an abundance of both river and saltwater fishing near the lodge.

The Anchor River is easily accessible via state land which is just few minutes away. The river has excellent runs of King Salmon (Chinook), Silver Salmon (Coho), and Steelhead (sea running rainbow trout). There are also many other rivers close by to fish. Deep Creek and Ninilchik River are both located in Ninilchik only 20 minutes north. The Homer "fishing hole" is located only 15 minutes south on the Homer Spit. The Kasiloff River is 45 minutes north and the world famous Kenai River is 1 hour north. The Kasiloff and Kenai are large rivers which are best fished from a boat. Nearby Ninilchik, Deep Creek, and our own Anchor River are smaller rivers that are fished on foot and provide the incredible experience of catching salmon 15-40 lbs (Kings) or 10-15 lbs (Silvers) from rivers small enough to wade across in places! Dolly Varden (close relatives of Arctic Char and Brook Trout) are available from early July through October in our local rivers and sometimes right off the beach. Steelheads are plentiful in the Anchor River in September and October (catch and release only) and offer the ultimate experience for the fly fishing purests.

The Anchor River has the largest Steelhead run in southcentral Alaska. They have been protected by a catch & rlease regulation since 1989, and their numbers are coming back strong. September and October are peak months for this ultimate sport fish. The river is very quiet at this time as well. Here are a couple of articles about steelhead on the Anchor River: article 1 and article 2.

Brian is a registered Alaskan Guide with over 25 years of experience fishing in Alaska and will be available, schedule permitting, for hire to guide you bank fishing on the local rivers. There is a special price available only to our guests. We have many good quality rod/reel outfits and waders available for rent at a nominal price (as little as $40/week).

Numerous charter boats are available for salt water fishing. Homer, the "Halibut Capital of the World", is only 15 minutes away and boats depart right here as well. Several halibut and salmon charters use the Anchor Point tractor launch just down the beach (within sight of the lodge!) which is the most desirable location to launch because it's closest to the best fishing areas. This equates to much more time fishing and less time running out and back. Halibut charter recommendations are found on our links page. If you are interested in salmon fishing only, Brian is a US Coast Guard licensed charter captain and fishes exclusively for salmon. Our 22 foot Hewescraft Searunner is a very seaworthy and comfortable boat, with a fully enclosable cabin. To maximize your experience and enjoyment, he limits the number of fishermen to 4, but can take up to 6 from the same group by request. Special prices are available to our lodge guests. Please see details on AK Salmon Charters.

There is a nearby fish processing business (Anchor Point Seafoods) just a few miles away that does a wonderful job of cleaning, vacuum sealing, and fast freezing your catch for a very reasonable price. They will also pack and weigh your catch in fish boxes (good for 48 hours) when you depart. We can also arrange for shipment of your fish by request.

The Alaska Fish and Game Department has an excellent website that provides a wealth of information on sport fishing, timing of the runs, and regulations.
